Understanding Tracer Tape
Tracer tape is a specialized tool used in various industries, primarily for locating underground utilities such as water lines. The tape is typically made of a durable plastic material that is embedded with metallic or conductive elements, allowing it to be detected by electronic locators. This feature makes it an essential component for ensuring the safety and efficiency of excavation projects.
The functionality of tracer tape lies in its ability to emit signals that can be picked up by utility locators. When buried alongside a water line, the tape serves as a beacon, guiding excavators or technicians to the exact location of the water line. This reduces the risk of accidental damage during digging, which can lead to costly repairs and service disruptions.
Installation of Tracer Tape

Installing tracer tape involves a straightforward process that is usually carried out during the installation of water lines. The tape is laid down directly on top of the pipe at specified intervals, ensuring that it covers the entire length of the line. It is crucial to position the tape correctly, as improper placement can lead to difficulties in detection later on.
Once the tape is in place, it should be buried along with the water line. Ideally, it should be positioned at a consistent depth, typically between 12 to 18 inches below the surface. This depth helps protect the tape from physical damage while still making it accessible for detection in the future.
Detection and Use of Tracer Tape
| Substrate | Virgin Grade LDPE (low density PE (Lightweight Polyethylene plastic)) or OPP/PE+Stainless steel wire(304 or 316) |
| Roll Size | 100unit of millimeters wide X 2Approx. 50m standard length long |
| material thickness | 100-300micron(0.1-0.3unit of millimeters) or customized |
| Name | tracer tape water |
| Color | Yellow, Yellow dark, Burgundy, Burgundy Alabaster, dark, Alabaster, VerdeTone Alabaster, Orange, Cerulean or customized |
| Usage | For safety warning of other buried objects |
To locate the water line using tracer tape, a locator device is employed. These devices are designed to pick up the signals emitted by the metallic elements in the tape. By passing the locator over the ground, technicians can identify the presence and direction of the water line without needing to excavate the area.
